Do subtask pts completed on tickets assigned to a diff board count towards that's board's velocity?

Richard Coles May 4, 2023

We have jira issues  where there are tasks for two different teams/boards.  (NB we use a custom field for teams).  WE have adev team doing most of the work and a specialist  ad tech/data team  who need to test/verify  the implementation. If an issue is, say 8 points for issue, if a subtask is assigned to another board/team (eg 1 point for testing) and the parent ticket and subtasks are marked as done does the 1 point go against the velocity of the team/board doing the testing whilst the full 8 points goes against  the main team?

Generally, no.  Sub-tasks do not have sprint estimates put on them, as they are not sprint items, and hence Jira ignores anything you do put on them.  The estimates that count towards the velocity of a board are the ones you put on the sprint items (stories).

You can script or automate a scheme that accumulates them up to their parent issues, but most people get this wrong and end up double-counting estimates, throwing the velocity and main Jira reporting right off.
