Difference between JIRA templates for next-gen Scrum v Kanban

There's a similar post, but it didn't quite answer my question.

I've set up two next-gen projects. One with a Scrum template, the other with a Kanban template.

From what I can tell, the only difference in features is that the Scrum project has a Backlog option in the left nav. Otherwise, it looks like all left nav options are the same.

Is that correct? If so, it seems like a small difference.

thx

Hello @Doug

Thank you for reaching out.

Both Scrum and Kanban templates of Next-gen projects have the exact same features and possibilities. Practically, the only difference between one template and another are the features initially selected for each of them:

Scrum:

Kanban:

In Scrum, your work is defined by Sprints and you need a time estimation to track and finish your work, while in Kanban you have a process of continuous improvement, where a time estimation for finish and Sprints are not necessary.

The reason why we created these two templates would be to make it easier for new users in Jira to get started and apply the features related to just one of the methodologies above, however, they are free to change it posteriorly if they decide to change the methodology or use a mix of the features on both templates. As a matter of fact, this possibility was highly requested in the past with Classic projects, that's why we implemented it in Next-gen.

For more details about the explanation above, you can check the section "Kanban vs scrum: What if you can't choose?" of the documentation below:

Thanks, Petter.

I'm looking at my list of Projects, and am not clear on which type some of them are. Scrum or Kanban. Or is that the template? Can you clarify Template vs Type? I wasn't able to find anything clear on this in search.

And re: selecting features. Can you tell me where I do that? Thx

Hello @Doug

You are welcome!

The type of project is Next-gen and can be easily identified when you navigate to the project, while the template (Scrum vs Kanban) depends on which features are being used on them.

In fact, Next-gen projects can be even used with features of both methodologies (Scrum and Kanban), so when I mentioned "template" I referred to the initial features selected for them when choosing kanban or scrum on the project creation. However, it is not a black and white differentiation, but only the methodology you choose to use for them.

You can check the features you are using in your Next-gen projects by navigating to them > Clicking on Project settings > Features.

Let us know if this information helps.

Thank you! Yes, it was the Features settings that I wasn't clear on. Thank you for the info!
