Cannot create an Epic

Ellyn Serra August 10, 2022

In the newest version of Jira, I cannot create a new Epic.  I have read through all of the Epic topics in the Community but cannot find the answer.

Adding Epics in the previous version was simple; the newest version, not so much.  I'm hoping someone can assist.

You're on a Cloud system, which is always on "latest" (give or take one release - updates typically happen every 4-6 weeks).

You're also in a Company managed project, which has an "issue type scheme".  If that scheme does not have Epics included, then you will not be able to create an Epic in there.

Can you try clicking "create" at the top and selecting this project, then look at the list of issue types - is Epic on the list there?  If not, then the scheme does not have Epics in it, and you'll need to get them added by an admin, or create Epics in a different project.

There appears to be another problem with your Epic link names, and I think this is one that might need to go to Atlassian support.  Your Epic Link drop-down should be showing the Epic name on all the Epic that it is offering, like it does for the one above your highlighted items.

I would want to check the actual Epic VHCP-43 (full issue view, maybe in a new tab or window) to see

  • if it has a name on it
  • if it is still an Epic

My theory is that it may have been converted to a story.  This would effectively blank out the Epic name, but it should also stop it appearing in the Epic list.  Hence the suggestion we need to go to Atlassian

Thank you, Nic.  Between the dev team and your answer, I was able to figure it out.

Hi @Ellyn Serra ,

What type of project are you using?

Could you take some screenshots of the problems you are having?

Hi @Thuan_ Do Dang - It's the newest version of Jira.  I used to be able to go to Backlog and create a new Epic.  I'm trying to assign epics to the issues but after moving to the newest version:

  • some of the Epics are gone; need to re-add
  • some are Epics are not named

It's quite frustrating.  Thank you for trying to assist.

Hi @Ellyn Serra ,

Have you sent any support request to Atlassian?

If not you can do it here https://support.atlassian.com/contact/

The last Jira software version is 9.1 and released in 21 July 2022. If your problem appeared some days ago, it may not related to Jira version.

  • some of the Epics are gone; need to re-add -> Only Epics are gone or Epics and their issue?
  • some are Epics are not named -> Epic name is a required field, I don't know why it can be emtpy

Thank you for trying.  Perhaps someone else has insight?
