How to grant access to a sprint

Hello everyone,

This article will explain to you- how to grant access to a sprint in a Jira Software project.

The 'Manage Sprints' permission in Jira Software allows users to perform the actions like

  • Creating, Starting, Completing, Reopening sprints
  • Reordering, Deleting future sprints
  • Editing sprint information (e.g. sprint name and dates)
  • Moving the sprint footer

In order to grant a user access to a sprint, we need to make sure that the user has 'Manage Sprints' permission in all the projects returned by the filter query applied to the board from which our sprint originates.

Tip: Please make sure that you have written a simplified filter query for your board. A query like “assignee = user1” should be avoided since this query will return all the projects available in your Jira instance. To handle such a case, you will have to provide the user 'Manage Sprints' permission in all the projects in your Jira instance. A better query will be “project = "PA" AND assignee = user1”

Now, let's see the best practice to assign the 'Manage Sprints' permission to users:

  • Create a new project role called Sprint Manager (or select a name as per your choice).
  • In the corresponding permission scheme, assign the 'Manage Sprints' permission to the Sprint Manager project role.
  • Associate the permission scheme with the corresponding projects in your Jira instance.
  • Add the appropriate users to the Sprint Manager project role in the corresponding projects

The user(s) should now be able to access the sprint.

Thanks for this post @Deepanshu Natani - This has helped me 2 or 3 times before. But experiencing this issue again.

Last time we resolved it is to, via the API add the Sprint manager group and the Sprint manager role to all projects, existing and new projects. And also ensure that the Manage Sprints permission has those assigned. But I am experiencing an issue where a user is in the Sprint manager group and also has the Sprint manager role but is not able to manage sprints .. I do have a ticket open to figure this one out.
