How to Downgrade Jira Software from Standard to Free

There are two steps to downgrade Jira Software from standard to free. The process will take about five minutes to complete.

1. Remove product access from users until you reach the free limit of 10 users.

2. Change your plan from standard to free.

If you still have questions, head to the FAQs at the bottom of this page.

Here’s how to downgrade:

Watch how-to video

STEP 1: REMOVE A USER

1. Go to admin.atlassian.com and click “Manage users” on the site that you’d like to remove users from.

And that’s it, you have now completed the steps to downgrade your Jira Software plan from standard to free.

FAQs

  • Why am I on a Standard plan? I thought I was using the Free version of Jira Software.
    • If you have more than 10 users on your product, you will automatically be upgraded to Jira Software Standard because the user limit for Jira Software Free is 10 users.
  • What are the differences between Jira Software Free and Standard?
    • Feel free to check out this chart to see the differences between all of the Jira Software product plans.
  • I don’t think the message that I got about downgrading to free applies to me. Why did I get it?
    • If you have 10 users or less and are on the free version of Jira Software, you should be ok to not take any action to change your plan.

This article was of great help. The system does not warn when the number of users is exceeded and changes plans by itself.

I believe this is the same step for all Atlassian products as they are managed centrally in the admin portal, right? And thank you for the article and the screen shots @Emily Crowe

Reduced the number of users to 10 but the plan change button is not available. What could be the problem?

@Emily Crowe What happens when we are on a standard plan, and have already more than 2GB of data stored? Do we have some management interface where we can clean the "trash"? Or do we have to chase storage items in old tickets?

@Diogo Andrade Hopefully this is helpful:

To clear storage space an admin would have to remove files that have been attached to old projects,  either by going into those old projects and deleting those attached entirely or simply just deleting the old projects. Here's how to do this: https://support.atlassian.com/security-and-access-policies/docs/track-storage-and-move-data-across-products/

@Alba if you have less than 10 users, you will be automatically downgraded to Free after your trial is over. You should be ok to not take any action at this point.

To all Russians and possibly Belarusians. If you have the same problem as I had and see no 'change' button, that is the reaction of Atlassian to 'what is going on'. Everything is as it intended to be. You do not see it because there is no button for you guys. We can accidentally exceed 10 user limit, but we are unable to change manually our Jira plans back to free ones. You have to send a message to the Customer Support and ask them to downgrade the plan.

I am unable to downgrade as the JIRA software was deactivated instead of being downgraded, requiring reactivation by support.

Hi,

My org has 25 users using Confluence (Cloud) and Jira (Cloud) and we are billed according to the respective standard plans/tiers. We now have only 5users using Jira while all the rest (25) will keep using Confluence. How can i downgrade our Jira tier to free while keeping the Standard Confluence tier ? I have removed product access for 20 out of my 25 users from the (Jira) admin center (now Jira says 5/25 users) but i still cannot downgrade form billing page...

P.S. i followed this steps here for but for Jira. (How to Downgrade Confluence from Standard to Free - Atlassian Community)

Some guidance would be much appreciated here!

1. What is the difference in the time duration for usage in the free and standard plan?

2. When the 14 day trial for standard plan is exceeded, will one be automatically downgraded to the free plan, or one would  be requested to upgrade to continue to use the software.

I am trying to downgrade my premium trial to a free tier - but the above description does not work. My subscription details do not show the option to change the plan to free. What can I do?

One of my Jira Projects has gone inactive
It was in the Standard Plan. I'm unable to find the change subscription option. Only getting the "Reactivate" option.
