Github for Jira - the complete solution to integrate your Github Enterprise and Cloud repos in Jira

Hi Atlassian Community,

I work on the Jira Software product team and I'm excited to introduce a new and better way to connect GitHub Enterprise and GitHub Cloud with Jira Software Cloud. We've just launched the GitHub for Jira app, which offers a complete solution with improved efficiency, security, and performance.

:fire: App features and improvements

  • GitHub for Jira is the only GitHub Enterprise enabled integration in the Atlassian Marketplace that deeply connects deployment data with your Jira project. This allows you to view deployment data in Jira issues and unlocks valuable insights from the deployment frequency report and deployment timelines.

  • The app allows you to create branches directly from Jira issues. This is more convenient for end users and helps avoid common mistakes like malformed or forgotten Jira issues.

  • The app supports Jira Automation, so you can build if-this-then-that rules based on events in GitHub. This improves processes, saves time, and helps keep your Jira project up-to-date.

  • Once you migrate, the app can backfill all your deployment data. We have also reduced the time it takes to run a backfill, helping large organizations get up and running sooner.

  • And more on performance… pull request, commit, and branch data will display in Jira issues in seconds, rather than minutes.

What about DVCS Connector?

GitHub for Jira has feature parity with the DVCS Connector, so your day-to-day workflow will remain the same once you migrate—plus the added benefits mentioned above. And with active development on the app, you can be sure to get even more value out of it in the future.

As part of this launch, we decided to disable new DVCS connections for new organizations, as we eventually plan to deprecate the DVCS connector for GitHub Enterprise but we will phase it out slowly and give plenty of time to migrate to the new GitHub for Jira app. Until then, the existing connections continue to work as usual, but it will not be possible to add any new organisations. You'll see a link on the new DVCS connection page for a guide (https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-articles/Everything-you-need-to-know-about-migrating-from-the-DVCS/ba-p/945910 ) on how to set up the GitHub for Jira app. Don’t worry about existing connections, everything will continue to work as normal for existing organizations.

We hope you enjoy taking this new integration for a spin! Please let me know if you have any feedback or questions on this integration, we would love to hear from you!

@Ryan Jiang That's a piece of great news that "GitHub for Jira" app supports connections from Jira Software to GitHub Enterprise and GitHub Cloud!

I have a few questions that I would like to clarify here:

1. Is "GitHub Cloud" same as "GitHub.com"?

2. I remember that connections to "GitHub.com" were possible via a "GitHub Connect" app (which I am assuming was the same as "Github for Jira" app). So, it this a totally new app, or are the features of the app have been expanded to provide connections with GitHub Enterprise now?

3. Is this app only available for Jira Software Cloud? Is there a similar app available for Jira Software Server/DC as well , or planned for the near future, or do we still need to connect Jira Software Server/DC to GitHub Enterprise and GitHub.com using the DVCS connector?

4. Does this app support connections from Jira Software Cloud to Bitbucket Cloud as well, or do we still need to use the DVCS connector to make these connections?

@Ryan Jiang Great news. Now it's still not available to connect GitHub cloud when there is IP address restriction. https://github.com/atlassian/github-for-jira/issues/1378

Hope this case is also available.

We have DC Jira Software and Enterprise GitHub, when will a similar app be available natively for Jira Software DC as well ? Is there a plan for it?

Hi @Taranjeet Singh

Thanks for the comments. To answer your questions:

1. Yes. Github Cloud is referring to Git services provided on "github.com" (as opposed to Github Enterprise Server running on in-house infrastructure)

2. No, I believe "GitHub Connect" app is a different app to "Github for Jira". The "Github for Jira" app now expanded its capability to provide connections with Github Enterprise now.

3. Yes. "Github for Jira" app currently works with Jira Software Cloud, but not on Jira Software Server/DC. We don't yet have any short-term plans to bring it o Jira Software Server/DC, therefore Jira Software Server/DC will continue to leverage DVCS connector.

4. No. "Github for Jira" only supports connections between Jira and Github.

Hope it helps,

Ryan

Hi @Balaji Krishnan ,

Thanks for reaching out.

We don't have plans on the current roadmap to ship "Github for Jira" or similar apps to Jira Software DC at the moment, but I will surface your feedback internally.

At the meantime, you may be interested in this cloud migration guide: https://www.atlassian.com/migration/plan/cloud-guide#introduction

Cheers,

Hi @Yugo Hino ,

Thanks for reaching us!

I have came across your comment in the Github issue, and sorry to see that you were having trouble connecting the app because of IP restrictions.

I hope you have came across this guide on configuring IP allow-list: https://github.com/atlassian/github-for-jira/blob/main/docs/ip-allowlist.md#simple-method .

In case that you have tried the configuration guide and still having trouble connecting, I'd suggest contacting us with more details of your situation to help us assist you further (since it was difficult to pin-point the issues using just the screenshots attached in the Github issue).

We are looking forward to helping you resolve the issue and get your connected toolchain up and running.

Best,

Ryan

Hi @Ryan Jiang

Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately, we are still facing the issue even though we already added the IPs which the team guided.

Which way is the best to reach the team?

@Ryan Jiang - would love to see this app developed for Data Center (if it makes technical sense). The idea of being able to periodically update DC components without having to update the entire Jira instance is always attractive.

@Dave Liao Hi Dave, thanks for reaching out. I can understand how this app would benefit the DC customers and admins. However, it's not planned in our short-term roadmap yet, but I will make sure that the team is keeping an eye on this request going forward.

Hi @Ryan Jiang

Is there a migration plan for GitHub Enterprise users that use SAML login as an auth method?
We heavily rely on our existing DVCS integrations, but are unable to setup new integrations (as you mention in the post this is now disabled.

Regards,
Willem
