Hi Atlassian Community 👋
Are you a developer and want to be automatically notified when there are changes to designs that you’ve already started working on? Or perhaps you’re a designer who wants to automatically notify your developers when your designs are ready for development?
If so, we've got great news for you! We've launched design automations to make the collaboration and workflow between designers and their development teams more seamless than ever.
We’ve added design automations in Jira to help teams reduce friction, time cost, and any potential misalignments during the design to development workflow. For example, your team can set up design automations to notify developers changes to designs, transition issue statuses, and easily add labels to issues with designs.
We’ve added four design automation components:
Trigger - Design linked to issue
Trigger - Linked design updated
Trigger - Status of a linked design changes
Condition - Issue has linked design
And seven templates to get your team started!
Example 1
This template automatically adds a “design-linked” label to the issue, allowing your team to easily identify issues with designs linked and also search for issues by this label.
Example 2
This notifies a Microsoft Teams channel that a design has been linked to an issue. If your team uses Microsoft Teams, set up this template to notify your engineering channel so everyone’s up to date with the design progress. The message will also provide a link to the issue itself and indicate who the assignee is.
Example 3
Your team can first create a “ready for dev” status on the Jira board and set up this template to transition all issues with designs that become marked as “ready for dev” to this column in the board view.
Our other templates also allow you to notify the issue assignee that the design linked to their issue they’ve started working on has been updated, add “ready-for-dev” labels to issues, and also Slack the designer or any other reviewers to check there are no misalignments between the engineering output and the designs!
If you are new to Automations in Jira, you can read our handy getting started guide. In a nutshell, Automation is a no-code rule builder that enables you to build if-this-then-that rules based on events in Jira. But even if you’re an Automations pro and want to build your own rules from scratch, still feel free to check out our templates as a starting point and see how we’ve set them up!
To start using our design automation templates and customise them further:
Head over to Project settings > Automation > Templates
Scroll down to the “Design” section
Start using and customising the design automation templates
To start using our design components by building your own rule:
Head over to Project settings > Automation
Click the “Create rule” button in the top right corder
Start building your automation rules
Only Jira project and site admins can view and set up automation rules. If you are not a Jira admin, let your team’s admin know you want design automations set up! You can send them this post to catch them up to speed 🏃♀️
At the moment, we only support designs that are linked via the Figma for Jira app. You will also need to configure the app for the linked design updated and status of a linked design changes triggers as they require live design updates. You must connect Jira to all of your team’s Figma spaces for these two triggers to fire correctly. Learn how to integrate and set up Figma with Jira.
With design automations, you can now drive your design and development collaboration inside Jira. Try it out in your project and if you have any questions or feedback, let us know what you think in the thread below! 👇
