What integrations exist between JSM and Trello or JWM?

Matt Romney April 9, 2024

We currently use Jira Service Management and are expanding our use.  We also need an application for Project management and are looking at Trello and Jira Work Management.  One of the questions I need to answer is what are the differences in how the applications integrate with each other. Our idea is to have JSM be the front facing application that customers can use to ask us questions and report issues.  Then as we determine that a project needs to be kicked off we want to be able to link the issues from JSM and the project in the project management app.

  • Is this possible?
  • Are there integrations that exist between JSM and JWM that don't exist between JSM and Trello?
  • Which Project management app will be better for this?

Hi @Matt Romney

I would look to choose a platform on more than just the integration, but if the intent is to have a close link between the two - Jira Work Management is going to be a better option in my view.

This is because it'll be all hosted within the one instance - so one login, one set of products, and one user/admin experience.

You'll also get more native integration options here, and can use Automation to a greater extent (eg. passing data between 2 issues bidirectionally).

Whilst I agree with Mikael that you can use smart links, it's just not a native integration between Trello and JSM - so JWM feels like a better fit here.

It is possible, and it depends on what you are expecting the integration to do. All Atlassian products support what is called smart links, meaning that if you link a JSM request to a Trello card you would not have to leave Trello in order to view the request. You can also use Automation between JSM and JWM if you wanted to clone/link a request in JSM to an issue in JWM.

So should you pick Trello or JWM for your project management? What I tell my users are, if you want something that you can spin up really fast and be less restrictive then go with Trello. And if you want be be able to control the workflow a bit more then JWM is the way to go. You can always start with Trello and then import it into JWM if needed later on.

Hi @Matt Romney! You can integrate Jira Service Management, Jira and Trello with a 2-way sync platform, like Unito.

Here's a guide on how to connect Jira and Trello! It's focuses on Trello and Jira Software / Work Management, but the same principles apply to a JSM integration.

So it is possible to integrate each of those tools. Most of the solutions out there provide 1-way trigger/action automations, but Unito is built on real-time 2-way syncing with a no-code interface.

That means you don't need to jump through hoops to set up a workflow that creates Jira issues or Trello cards automatically based on your manual activity. Unito keeps changes between your connected tools synced in real-time, and by "no-code" we mean you don't have to write script to configure any of this. It's all easy to access through a point and click interface.

In terms of one project management app versus the other, it really depends on your preferences and use case. I think engineering and dev teams prefer to work in Jira, while marketing and sales teams (when not in a CRM) would prefer Trello.

But in terms of which tools offer the "smoothest" integration, you really can't go wrong with any of them since they're all Atlassian products.
