When looking at the discovery tool, it seems to imply it on works on-network.
Does the discovery agent work on remote computers not connected via a VPN?
Hi Myles,
If you are asking the Assets Discovery application, then the answer is; it works both with agents and agentless.
- Agentless: is the default mode. You can scan you subnets without needing to install an agent. This is good if your devices (i.e. Servers, network switches, load balancers, firewalls, ip cameras, network printers etc.) are always online and accessible.
- With an agent: You need to install the agent on the windows device. (It doesn't support MacOS, Linux, etc.). The agent can run at the background and transfer the output to a common folder, or to JSM Cloud directly. In case, you want to collect all the outputs in a common folder, you would need the device to be connected to your VPN and have access to the common folder.
I hope this helps.
Cheers

Hey @Hakan Bahadir _Pio_,
If we have multiple shifts where some users may or may not be on the VPN, we would like to be able to use the agentless scan. How long does the scan take? Does it bog down or slow down the network and/or computers?
My thinking is if we could run the scan a few times a day/week we would eventually get 95% of the assets.
Thank you

Hello,
Yes, that would work. Here are some notes:
- The scan takes a few seconds per device.
- Users wouldn't recognize it. No serious impact on the device or the network.
- You can find the list of commands executed on the following page:
- You can enable or disable the list of commands as you wish. Disabling the ones that you don't need would speedup the scanning.
- Please have a look at the configuration details of Assets Discovery. You need to be able to have WMI, SSH or SNMP access to the device that you will scan.
The duration highly depends on your network structure. If you have large subnets with few devices, it would take some time to check the unused IP Addresses.
For that reason, you will get the real answers once you install and try. My recommendation is to start with 1 laptop. Measure the duration. Then scan 10 and note the duration again. Then scale up to 100, 1000 etc...
In case you have thousands of devices and very large networks, then you may run multiple Assets Discovery applications in parallel for different subnets. Since there is no licensing and cost, you can scale horizontally in this way.
