How to Replace the AQL Input Field with a Dropdown in Jira Cloud Asset Fields?

Hello,

I’m trying to improve the user experience for an Asset field in Jira Cloud. Currently, the field displays an input box where users are required to manually enter an AQL query to filter and select values. Even when I configure the field with a very narrow filter using AQL, the field still shows an input box instead of a simple dropdown.

In contrast, Text fields configured with predefined options allow users to select values directly from a dropdown, which is exactly what my users prefer. Unfortunately, with Asset fields, the input for AQL queries makes the process more complicated for them.

My questions:

  1. Is there any way to configure an Asset field in Jira Cloud to show a dropdown instead of an AQL input box?
  2. Can this be achieved using ScriptRunner, or is there another method to create this functionality in Jira Cloud?
  3. If it’s currently impossible, is there any roadmap or workaround recommended by Atlassian for this type of use case?

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hi @David Porteš

Welcome to the community.

Currently this is not an option.

There are open feature requests on this, see:

Hi @David Porteš

I’m not aware of input fields for AQLs. If you could share a screenshot of this field and its configuration.

The Assets custom fields are able to do what you described, show a dropdown with predefined values.
If you could also share an example of how your assets are configured and the values you want to retrieve, would be good for a better understanding and suggest a solution :)

Hi @Mariana Silveira Sales ,

I'm sending snapshots of our custom fields to clarify the issue I described earlier:

  • Asset Field with AQL:
This is the field configured with AQL. However, instead of displaying a dropdown for users to select values, it shows a text input where users need to type their query. Our customers strongly prefer a dropdown over this AQL input method.

From that asset I would like to have in dropdown either Name or Celý název (if possible)Asset preview.png

  • Text Field with Dropdown:
This is another field (a simple text field) where dropdown functionality works seamlessly. Users can easily select values without typing anything.

Additional Information:

The search bar shown in the snapshots is located at customurl.atlassian.net/issues, under the BASIC search view (not JQL). Users want a similar dropdown experience for the Asset field in this view.
