Asset import with linked objects

Jacek October 7, 2024 edited

Hello

just a weird problem. I am not a asset pro already but did already some imports in assets with csv files and have already multiple schemas. So actually i tried to update already imported objects with new values.

The values i like to complete are:

  • Manufacturer (linked object)
  • Location (linked object)
  • Hardware Model (linked object)
  • Storage (not linked)
  • Operating System Version (not linked)

So the import mapping was used already sooner and have worked fine.
Today i try to import the new values and i really dont understand why, but the Hardware Model will be not updated in the assets.

Checkt the spelling and everything looks good. Deleted the mapping and recreated it again. Tried again but no chance. Everything is working for importing except the Hardware Models for the windows devices.
I have HW Models which where created sooner and some HW Model objects i created today.

May someone have an idea what to look for?

THX in Advance for every idea someone have.

Hello @Jacek ,

If you are importing the linked objects, are the linked objects are already imported before the main assets are imported.

Hi Vijay

Im an not sure if you are asking for trying helping me or because you need some answers how i did when i started with this.

Not all of my assets are imported. In this case i am unser if everything was imported are also created manually. If i have only 10-20 objects is easier to enter (copy paste) from an sheet.

But all object i need to link i need it available first in the assets.

So for example lets talking about Notebooks and Assigned user

1. The user objects needs to be imported and matched to the atlassian account id.
2. Importing the notebooks with all attributes and i need then the usernames (notebook assigned to user) also in the csv. While importing i need also to link the assets i like to link in the import attributes mapping. And the attributes i need to link have to be set for objects

I am not sure if not another better/shorter way exists, but this is working fine for me. Except the one problem i have here written.

If you are struggling with this, just google for the jsm assets guide from atlassian. I started with it and learned a lot.

And my recommendation, when you can use the asset templates for beginning. I dont know why, but i have done everything how its written in the guide the first time and have created the asset schemas without templates and had a lot of troubles with linking objects. Then everything deleted and tried with the templates with exactly the same steps and it was working from beginning.

I started with this handbook

https://www.atlassian.com/whitepapers/it-asset-and-service-configuration-management-in-jira-service-management

But actually it looks that atlassian have an web version for this:

https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/service-management/product-guide/overview#jira-service-management

Actually i started with the data asset manager. Will be interessting how i can do it there. Data asset manager can be fully automated when the last step will be released from atlassian.
