Changing Base URL of cloud JIRA Service Desk

Emil Genov June 13, 2018

Hello All,

We are company which is using the JIRA Service Desk cloud instance:

https://floservicedesk.atlassian.net

We would like to change our Base URL which should not include atlassian.net domain , but our own.

Can we do this with the cloud instance of JIRA or we need to have our own instance of JIRA Service Desk hosted on our server in order to be able to do this modification.

Thank you.

Hi there,

Just to confirm, Atlassian have a pretty clear KB about that: https://confluence.atlassian.com/purchasing/can-i-customize-my-atlassian-cloud-url-321848678.html

You should definitely host your own instance to have your domain name associated with it. You'll also get more available addons but a slightly different UI. Please also note that you can backup your Cloud instance to restore it in Server edition.

Hope this helps!

Cheers

Thank you All for the answers,

I just got familiar with this:

https://aws.amazon.com/quickstart/architecture/jira/

AWS Quick Start DC for JIRA products. And I am wonder if the Base URL can be changed here i order to use my own domain and not aws/amazon one ?

Anyone have nay idea ?

Amazon, or any other hosting provider in a VPC, will just provision IPs for you. You can buy/use domain names and add DNS rules to map your domain to those IPs! You should get in touch with your domain provider for that!

DC provisioning by Amazon will deploy an autoscalable DataCenter Atlassian product, if you don't need that much of a configuration I'd advise you to just get a cloud machine, would lower the cost quite a lot!

Cheers

Thanks Micky,

We just want to have our own domain in the URL, and not to use other domains - atlassian, amzon ..etc.

What is the moste cheapest way to do it? Just get a VM from AWS and install the server version of JIRA Service Desk ?

Thanks :)

I'd say so yes! If you don't plan on having much traffic/users you definitely should start with a single VM (from AWS, Microsoft Azure...) and use it to install your products! You can then configure the DNS from your domain provider to point your domain or a subdomain to your IP. That would require a few admin things to hide the port number with a reverse proxy for example but nothing very difficult, everything is well documented!

The AWS/Azure... machine should be scaled based on your needs (some tips here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/enterprise/scaling-jira-867028644.html).

If you'd like to delegate those admin things, some Partners might also offer hosting (managed) with a slightly higher cost but with maintenance included!

Hope this helps!

Hello Micky,

I really helped me getting the whole picture.

Can you elaborate a bit more on the Partner's part with the maintenance included ?

Thanks

Hi Emil,

Partners are companies specialized in Atlassian services. Some of them offers Managed Hosting which means they take care of creating all of your instance(s) and administer them from a system perspective: that's an all-inclusive service which comes with higher costs than self hosting but far more questions to worry about when you're not familiar with internal hosting!

You can try and see if some partners around you offers this service here: https://www.atlassian.com/partners/search just pick a country and select "Managed Hosting" in expertise filter :)

If so, you might want to evaluate the cost agains you buying the license + VM and set it up by yourself! That's the quick and easy solution, if you have enough budget for it!

Cheers

Emil,

All cloud instances must have atlassian.net domain.

Link below gives you the basics
