Which permission is necessary to create a workflow?

Good morning,

I have access to a project in Jira, in this project i have the role of administrator but if i go to this section : Project >> Project Settings >>workflows , I can see all the workflows but I can't modify any of them (all have the text at the end : "View as text").

Do I need more permissions to execute this action?.

Thanks in advance!

Cristina

PD : If i see the characteristics of my role ( in permissions section)  I can see the option:

View Read-Only Workflow

Users with this permission may view a read-only version of a workflow.

My role is Administrator and it's on the list asociated with this option.

To edit workflow, you need to either:

  • Be a Jira or System administrator
  • Be a board administrator and have had Jira or System administrator "simplify" your workflow
  • Be a project administrator, on Jira Server 7.6 or above, with the workflow being used only by your project

Hi Nic,

thanks in advance.

I'm a Jira Administrator.

I don't know how to see if I have a board administrator and the Jira version is : v7.5.0

Thanks so much!

Hi Cristina,

as an Jira Administrator, you can create and edit workflows.

If you have Project Administration permission, it depends on some conditions, whether you can edit the project's workflow or not:

  • Maybe the Jira Administrator restricted this. Look at the permission scheme and check if the Extended Project Administration is enabled
  • Maybe the workflow is shared between projects. You can't edit shared workflows.
  • Maybe your Jira Version is too old. Extended Project Administration was introduced with Jira 7.3

Thanks in advance!

I have seen than some of the workflows are used in different projects, but i can't see the button to create a new one  :(.

Extended Project Administration is enabled (or it looks enabled)

And Jira version is v7.5.0

So, I don't know what else we can do :(.

Thanks so much!

You can't create a new workflow. Extended project administration enables you to edit an existing workflow, if it is not shared with another project.

You have to ask your Jira Administrator to create a new workflow for you.

Ok.

We have the administrator role but it's not enought?

Who is the real administrator, Project lead?

Thanks again.

No, the Jira administrator has nothing to do with a project role. You should see your admins on that page:

How to manage many similar workflows?

I have multiple projects that use variations of the same base workflow. The variations depend on the requirements of the project or issue type. The variations mostly come in the form of new statuses ...
