How to resolve: duplicate users between Jira Internal directory and Active Directory

Hello All,

We have two directories.

1. Active directory

2. Jira Internal directory

We had both directories connected before this change.

We have a situation where all the necessary users existed in AD but recently we did SSO integration which ended up creating duplicate profiles for some users from AD in Jira Internal Directory with same username for both profiles.

We see this when we are trying to assign some users to Issues or Projects in the "Assignee" field. In this case, we see same user with same username listed twice.

Goal: we need to remove the duplicated users from Jira Internal Directory and re-assign any issues, Projects or Groups that they were assigned to their original profile in AD. Will this be possible?

When we go to the users list in "User Management", we will see only one listing for that user. We think that it could just be due to the way the user list is imported in both cases.

Thanks you for your time!

Brijesh,

You can use this knowledge base article to merge the duplicate accounts.  https://confluence.atlassian.com/jirakb/how-to-merge-two-users-content-ownership-and-permissions-in-jira-968659640.html

Make sure you have a backup to roll back to as you will be making changes to the DB.  You should also make sure you have a list of users to validate against before you let users back into the instance so you can confirm that a roll back is not required.

Thank you for your response!

Isn't there any other way we can do it? I found this post with comment from Stephen Crandell where the duplicate users were deleted and associations moved to original user profiles:

https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/Move-all-JIRA-associations-from-one-user-to-another/qaq-p/143805

Will this not be possible? I am not sure if creating temp tables in the DB and stopping JIRA will be an easy thing to ask for.

You can always try what you found in the article to see if it works.  I have never done that before.
