how do I add an epic to the backlog when creating an issue?

Epic shows up as an issue type in project settings but I can't select epic when creating an issue on the backlog?

Interesting! If the type is available in project setting, that should be enough for you to create Epic from the backlog. Also, make sure Epic type is not excluded by your board filter

yeh, I don't understand that, epics are 'separated' by a line as per screen shot?'Screen Shot 2019-09-16 at 13.55.05.png

Can you also provide the screenshot of issue type scheme?

I am not a cloud user but I think these types are similar to server version

you seem to be using next gen projects. Check out this article on how to create epics

I don't think you can create them inline on board
