How do I add an existing story to an epic?

Got it. Simply edit the post function in the workflow, and remove the "assign to current user function"

It's likely that there's a post-function on the workflow associated with your project that is assigning the case to you when you transition it. Check the documentation at https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Advanced+workflow+configurationif you are not sure how to do that. ;)
