Is there anything that I can do in Jira Core that I cannot do in the other Jira products?

Elle E. Benami January 26, 2021

Hi Everyone,

After a lot of research on the various project types and templates, I'd like to ask the Atlassian Community the following:

Is there anything that I can do in Jira Core that I cannot do in Jira Software and/or Jira Service Management?

Maybe the answer depends on whether it is a Jira Software Classic or Next-Gen. (I believe that Jira Service Management only comes in Next-Gen.)

Thanks in advance,

Elle

Nothing you'd really notice.  I tend to think of JSD and Software as adding layers of functions over the top of Core projects, rather than being different things.

There are a couple of things, but they're functional rather than data related.  For example, Software boards block the simple boards Core projects can have, but it's no huge loss as you can replicate them with a Kanban (and if you do, you'll find the Kanban board has more power and flexibility anyway)

Thanks, @Nic Brough -Adaptavist-! Could you please clarify what this means: "Software boards block the simple boards Core projects can have."

Core projects have a simple and non-configurable board attached to them.  But when you use a Software project, you won't get to it, you'll be taken to the Software boards.

Hi Elle,

There is nothing really that Core provides that Jira Classic Software projects cannot. However, Classic Software projects are capable of a little more than Core provides.

Having said that, Core is different than Next-gen in that it can use share schemes and shared custom fields.

JSM is more in line with Classic Software projects, although there is also a JSM for Next-gen version.

Thank you, @John Funk. The shared schemes and fields is a good differentiator I hadn't thought of.

Also, I thought that JSM only came in Next-Gen—are you saying that it comes in Classic as well?

Technically it is a different product, but yes the main version JSM more closely aligns with Classic Software. Then there is a second newer version of JSM for Next-gen.

@John Funk I only know of one JSM product, which I get to when creating a new project using the following path: Projects > Create Project > Change template > Try a next-gen template > Service project. Given this, I understand JSM to be on next-gen only. There is no other path that I can find to create a JSM project. Can you please clarify?

I don't see what you mean; Jira Service Management doesn't have a Classic version, but only Next-Gen.

Log into your Cloud system as an admin and then go to Projects -> Create project.

Hit "change template", select "Service project", then look to the bottom of the list where you can swap between "try a next-gen template" and "explore classic templates"

I suspect what you really mean is that you have not created any JSM Classic project yet, so you can't select one.

These are the only options I see for Classic—no service project available:

You have to add the JSM product to your instance using the link I posted above.
