How to uninstall Jira core (not used) without interrupting Jira software

Henk_Ovotrack March 9, 2017

On our own server we are running and using JIRA software. Some time ago JIRA core was installed for whatever reason, now since we do not use JIRA core i like to uninstall just JIRA core without interfering with the JIRA software operation.

Hi Henk,

You can't uninstall JIRA Core and keep JIRA Software.

"The JIRA family of applications are built on the JIRA platform. JIRA Core is the default application of the JIRA platform"

Talk to Atlassian license support because you shouldn't need both.

https://confluence.atlassian.com/migration/jira-7/server_jira_license-upgrade

"A JIRA Software license provides access to JIRA Core functionality PLUS access to software development features, such as boards, development tool integration, and the ability to create software development projects."

Without Core, Software a) has no platform to run on and b) has no issues, projects, users, workflows, fields etc to work with.

Software is an application that runs on the Core platform.

Jira Software is a stand alone product, though. And both, Software and Core come with separate licenses. Installing Jira Software on its own works just fine. However, once one installs Jira Core also, you can't get rid of it - at least what I know of. So how can one install Software without Core? And why is it coming back even after I uninstalled Core (and reinstalled Software - but kept the jira home directory)?

No, it is not a standalone product.  Jira Software is an "Application" that runs on the Jira "Platform".

The Jira Platform is what you get when you install Jira Core.

There is an installer for Jira Software that installs a bundle of Core and Software.  That's why it "comes back" - because you need the Core Platform to run Software on.

Actually the simple answer is: Jira Software includes Jira Core and one does not need to purchase an additional Core license.

- If Jira Core still shows up, simply remove the license and it disappears (else you get license expired warnings).
