How do you show user story dependencies in Jira?

Paige Fordice June 15, 2017

Is there any functionality to link user stories to show dependencies?

Stories can be linked ... it is a feature of JIRA.

Yes, I found the linking option, but can one show that User Story A must be done before User Story B? Or is that simply noted in the narrative, or part of backlog grooming and sprint planning? The options under linking didn't seem to offer much.

Thank you.

Do not use "relates to" -- use "Is blocked by".

Thanks!

But be aware - "Is blocked by" does not technically block the issue. It's just a name of the link and a hint for the viewer.

Start with issue linking, they're directional (e.g. X blocks Y, Y is blocked by X), you can define your own link types, and there's some reporting that can help you with them too
