How do I move an Issue to my Board from the Timeline (Roadmap) view?

Galen Howlett July 7, 2023

I can only seem to add issues to my board from the Backlog view. Much more useful imo to add them from my Timeline view where tasks are organized by epics. Even if I change their status, they don't appear on my board. Is there any way to do this? (I'm not currently using sprints and prefer not to yet but wondering if the only way to manage the board via timelines is via sprints...)

You can add the Sprints field to your Timeline view and select the desired Sprint for an issue using that field.

If you are using a Kanban board then you should only have to put the issues into progress to have them show up on your board.

I am using a kanban board view and not sprints. unfortunately changing the status of a task on my timeline does not put it into my board. ie. if I set the status to "Doing" it will not appear on my board.

Are you using the Timeline within the Project? Or the Advanced Timeline that comes with Jira Premium?

If you are using the Advanced Timeline, then you must Review and Accept your changes before it will be reflected on the board.

Are you using a Team Managed Project or a Company Managed Project?

In my testing, if I change the status of an item on the timeline, it will appear in the appropriate column of the Kanban Board for the project.

The problem could be with your Board, not with the timeline.

Can you provide a screenshot of your board and your timeline views?

I'm definitely not on premium or company account. I thought I was on pretty standard settings but I'm not positive which project type I originally chose. I'm mostly using the timeline view to organize epics and choose which tasks to work on, not really the time functionality. (yet). which may not be the best use. But I want to be able to look at tasks within epics, and then choose which task in which epic to work on next....

Ok, you are using a Team-Managed Software project.

Team Managed Projects behave much differently than company managed projects in Jira.

It looks like the Backlog in team-managed projects is a holding place for items you do not wish to start yet. There is not a specific status tied to the team-managed backlog as there would be on a company-managed project.

So the only way to put items into the backlog or move them out of the backlog is to use the Backlog View and manually drag them back and forth.

This is how Atlassian designed the team-managed backlog for a Kanban project.

Adding answer at top-level: https://support.atlassian.com/jira-software-cloud/docs/enable-the-backlog/

Go to backlog and enable the epic panel within the backlog view. This allows you to add issues to the board based on epics. This functionality is not available from the Timeline view or individual issues for some reason.
