Add Feature issue type

Judy Murphy January 17, 2023

My org is not using the Jira "Feature" issue type. They are using Epic and User Story. I was told  we might have to pay extra to add the "feature" issue type. This was a suprise to me. I always thought you just talk to your admin and ask them to make it available.

What am I missing?

thanks

We are cloud based. I am used to this heirarchy epic-> feature -> user story, et al. I thought Feature was a standard Jira issue type because I've always seen in my other projects.

Thanks

Hello @Judy Murphy

Are you working with Jira Server/Data Center or Jira Cloud?

In either case you a Jira Administrator should be able to add a new issue type and name it "Feature" if such does not already exist. The issue type would need to be included in the Issue Type Schemes used by the projects to be available for actual use.

What you may be thinking of is the functionality to support extending the issue hierarchy. The basic hierarchy is

Epic > standard issues (story, bug, task, etc.) > Subtasks

If you create a new issue type and name it "Feature", that would be adding another issue in the middle at the "standard issues" level.

If you wanted to extend the hierarchy to be:

Feature > Epic > standard issues > Subtasks

...that could require additional money. The Jira Cloud Standard plan does not include the hierarchy extension feature, but the Jira Cloud Premium plan does. With the self-hosted Jira products, depending on your product version and whether it is Server or Data Center, again you might have to upgrade to get the hierarchy extension capability.

The hierarchy you described is not the default hierarchy. It would've required customization of the Jira environment.

By "other projects" do you mean in the same Jira environment or projects in other Jira environments? And if other Jira environments were those Cloud or self-hosted?

In your current Cloud based environment do you see a Plans option in your menu bar?

If you do, then your environment is on at least the Premium subscription and has access to the hierarchy extending features of Advanced Roadmaps. Note though that the hierarchy is applied system wide, no per project.

All I see is your work, projects, filters, dashboards, people, apps. I am not an admin if it makes a difference. What kind of plan do you need to to have access to a feature issue type?
