Sprints showing up in dropdown that aren't active sprints in any of our projects

Denis Haskin October 27, 2021

When we are in a Jira ticket and want to assign a sprint, the list of sprints that is presented in the dropdown is way more than the active sprints in all of our projects (which are only 3), and we cannot find  anywhere that these sprints exist or how to get rid of them.  It makes assigning tickets to sprints very haphazard.Screen Shot 2021-10-27 at 1.21.27 PM.png

Something's definitely not right, though... in all the projects we have, there are no such sprints with those names, current or future.

We *are* doing the workaround of prefixing sprint names to make them searchable, but you have to admit that's pretty lame... :-)

For the ones you say you don't find in any of your projects, what happens if you go to the Search Issues screen and try to search for "sprint = <one of those sprint names>" ?

No issues are shown.

And the same is true for the "mystery" sprints that are active (not just future)

Hm, okay. Well, the Sprints have definitely been defined somewhere. The problem is being able to find the board where they were created so that you can delete them or close them.

This same topic is discussed in another recent post here:

https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Software-questions/How-to-find-details-for-the-sprint-who-and-where-created-it-and/qaq-p/1427583

...where @Bill Sheboy noted there is no solution in the Jira Cloud space. In the Jira Server space a database query could be used.

Thanks -- Just fyi, I also sent this in as a support request and it's got the attention of the support team: they're puzzled as well and are investigating.

Please post back here to let us know how that turns out.

I am seeing sprints from a deleted project! No way to get rid of those 🙃

Sprints belong to boards, not projects. Boards are not automatically deleted when the projects they reference are deleted. You might want to review your Boards list to see if you need to delete boards for which the projects have been deleted.

Good notion, but I just looked at Boards list, and I found no boards for my deleted projects.

Notice that several of the sprints say "Future sprint". This list does not show only the active sprints, but also shows the sprints that have been created but not started.

Additionally, the list is not limited to sprints in specific projects. This list will show sprints across the entire Jira instance.

If you want to show fewer items in this list, you have to start typing in a sprint name to reduce the list to potential matches. You may want to standardize a naming convention for your sprints to identify the project or board to which they are associated.
