the user stories have disappeared from the backlog

Most often this is board filter/config, not data loss.

Can you check:-
1) Backlog filter (assignee, quick filters, sprint, labels).
2) Board filter JQL (Board settings -> General -> Filter query).
3) Columns/status mapping (stories may be in statuses not mapped to board columns/backlog).
4) Permissions and issue security levels.
5) “Done issues hidden after X days” board setting.

Run an issue navigator search (project + issuetype=Story) to confirm stories still exist, then align board filter/mapping.
