Are you looking for a way to perform status transitions with an automation rule?

Example: you can have an automation rule with a "branch" on sub-tasks. And transition the sub-tasks when the parent does.

I'm just not sure what your questions is about. Could you elaborate please?

This can be done quite easily with an automation rule.

As a trigger you can use "work item created".

Next action: "edit work item"
Pick the "components" field and set it to copy from parent work item.
