burndown - a graphical view of actual logged work vs. the plan. The chart illustrates a downward trend from "full" to "empty" where "full" equates to the total number of story points for a sprint and "empty" equates to completing all work.

velocity - provides an average amount of work a team has demonstrated they can achieve over a period of time. This is generally illustrated in story points, e.g. my team of 5 engineers has shown they can achieve 60-70 SP over a two week sprint. Things that greatly influence accuracy/reliability:

  • consistent team members and availability
  • many historic sprints to base the average on
  • consistent estimation process
  • all things being equal... the more sprints a team goes thru the more reliable the velocity is
