The images and the thumbnails inside the activity stream gadget on the dashboard point to the local host.

That is worng, it should be pointing to the JIRA server path.

My JIRA server is hosted on AWS (amazon web servcies).

Saw this and figured I'd cross post an answer presented else where to keep people from having to keep searching.

"Make sure you have configured your Base URL in JIRA - it gets set to localhost by default: http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRA/Configuring+JIRA+Options#ConfiguringJIRAOptions-Settings
