Hi @Michael
Welcome to the Atlassian Community!
You don't need to delete the status itself. Instead, you can unmap it from the column.
To do this:
Go to Board settings → Columns.
Under Map statuses to columns, locate the status you want to remove.
Drag and drop the status into the Unmapped statuses (or Unassigned statuses for team-managed projects) section.
Once unmapped, issues in that status will no longer appear on the board until the status is mapped to a column again.
Check this documentation.

Hi Michael,
If you only added the status to the wrong column, go to Board settings > Layout > Columns, then drag it into Unmapped statuses. That removes it from the board, but it remains part of the workflow, and any work items currently using it will no longer appear on that board.
If you actually created the status by mistake and want to remove it completely, you’ll need to edit the workflow. For a team-managed space, go to Space settings > Work types, choose the work type, and select Edit workflow. For a company-managed space, a Jira administrator can go to Settings > Work items > Workflows and edit the applicable workflow. Jira will ask you to move any existing work items from the deleted status into another status before the workflow is updated.
So, unmap it if you only want it off the board. Edit the workflow if you want the status removed from the process entirely.
Thanks,
James
