how to autofill fields when a story is created from a backlog?

I have created a board for a team, with a filter based on a customized filed that has been added.

Is there a way to automatically fill this field with the correct content when creating a story directly from the backlog (with the + Create Issue function at the end of the Backlog), so that the story automatically is shown on the board? 

Now I have to create it and then edit the field afterwards, which is a bit cumbersome.

Hi Anni - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

You can certainly do that by a variety of methods. One would be to add a post function to the Create transition to set the field to a certain value. 

Another is to create an automation rule using Automation For Jira which is free with Jira Cloud. Here is some more information on that:

There are two types of automation:

• Global: In the Free version, you get 100 executions per product, per month
• Project: In all versions, you get unlimited executions per month

You can do this via global rules to apply to all projects also. You'll need to be a Jira Admin/Site Admin, go to Jira Settings > System > Automation Rules (left-hand menu).

There is also an option, to auto populate specific field from historical free text field (like summary or description) with ML1 plugin.
