has anyone used the "components" field instead of the "Fixed Version" field for release mgt?

We are being told that the two fields can be interchanged and work the same

It is certainly possible to align 'components' with your releases. While this is generally not a good practice, nothing prevents you from doing this.

Having said that, while there is some overlap, there is Component-specific and Version-specific functionality (e.g. Component Leads and Fix Version vs Affects Version) that is not interchangeable.

It's difficult to give any advise without knowing the full context and your specific use case, but generally you should make sure you have a good reason to go off the beaten track and use Jira functionality in a way different than how it's been designed.

Hi @[deleted],

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

There is nothing that prevents you from using components instead of versions for release management, but you will miss some of the features in Jira by doing so. By using versions you will get a version report and you can merge multiple versions into one.

Components are normally used to categorize your issues in the project into smaller parts.
