is there an auto-generated ticket number when i create a ticket? if none, can i add a field and configure the sequence of the ticket number? e.g. <project code><year><auto increment number> - H001-2011-001

Yes, it's the issue key. Format is <project code>-<sequence>. You can't configure that any further, although you can set up project codes with numbers in them (you'd need to create a new project for each year though)
