Yes/No - Have EPIC detail show it is on a SPRINT

Question"  My EPIC doesn't show as being in a SPRINT

If you have 10 cards(Stories associated with an EPIC)  and you move 5 of those stories to a CURRENT SPRINT......When you click on one of those stories, the right side of the page will show a field labeled SPRINT and the Sprint Name will be there automatically.  But if you go to the associated EPIC for that story.... and go to the right side of the page....the area labeled SPRINT will be showing the word "None"

#1) Why doesn't the SPRINT name auto populate like the story you moved into it does

#2) Is it a responsibility of the user to MANUALLY enter / select a SPRINT name to be logged in that Sprint Label area on the right side of the page?

Welcome to the community.

Jira is not designed to automatically set the Sprint field of an Epic based on assigning its child issues to sprints.

Epics don't get assigned to sprints. Items that get assigned to sprints should represent increments of work that can be completed during the sprint. An Epic will typically encompass an amount of work that will take more than one sprint to complete. It doesn't make sense in the scrum model to assign an Epic to a sprint.

I Agree... but - then why does JIRA allow you to enter a SPRINT name for an EPIC ?

Shouldn't it just be a disabled field for EPIC cards?

Jira allows it because Jira strives to enable teams to have some ability to make choices about how they use the product.

Jira does not require the entry of a Sprint for an Epic. You could choose to remove the Sprint field from the Field Configuration used by the Epic issue type and/or from the Screens used to display Epic issue types, if you think it is confusing to show a field that is not going to be used.
