The icon for stories, tasks and bugs are the same in my board, which makes hard to quickly differentiate those.
Is it possible to change the icons shown?

Yes icons of work items can be changed.
You will need to have Jira Administrator permission, to access the Jira settings and the work items to change icons.
If you are not, contact your Jira administrator.
You must be a registered user to add a comment. If you've already registered, sign in. Otherwise, register and sign in.
In /jira/settings/issues/issue-types select action Edit
and in Work type select image ... and Upload a new avatar
