Why is status label "CLOSE" rather than "CLOSED"?

The "CLOSE" label reads like an action button, not a status indicator.

Is there any reason JIRA doesn't include the "D"?

Hello,

Are you sure that your status is called Closed? You should open the workflow for your issue and check, what status is used there. If it it the Close status, then you should create the Closed status, if it does not exist, and map this workflow to the Closed status.

I'm a user, not an admin, so I don't have access to the workflow. But it sounds like you're saying the status labels are created by the administrator, not built into JIRA. So I should talk to the administrator, correct?

It is correct. Statuses can be created or edited by Administrators.
