Why is my newly created Kanban board populated with other cards ?

Robert Johnson May 9, 2020

Hey guys, i have a question and it's been driving me crazy. We have a new project and i want to create a Kanban board for this team. I am creating the board but it seems it's already populated with tons of cards from other boards.

Is there any way to get this board empty and just start adding my own cards related only to this project ?

Hi @Robert Johnson,

In your board settings, you will find that there is a filter pulling in the cards. You can modify this filter to display only the cards from your project. Locate the filter from your board settings.

Just an example:

Hey Walter, thanks for the reply.  The thing is i don't want to have any filters from the project.

So we have a main project and a few boards. I just want to create a new kanban board that is empty, no filters from the main project and start creating cards. Is that possible ?

I see what you mean, @Robert Johnson A board is always connected to issues stored in one or more underlying projects. It is not a concept of its own. And as a consequence, a new board on top of an existing Jira project will always show you the (open) issues that already belong to that project.

If you want to start from scratch (e.g. because you want to start a new project), you might consider to set up a new project. This in turn would also give you a new, empty board.

Hi @Robert Johnson

To add to the answer from @Walter Buggenhout whilst you might not want to have filters they can actually be for your benefit. At the moment you are using a default filter which is just selecting everything in the board. But if your business logic is

I want to use the same project but I want all issues after <date> to be managed on a Kanban board this can be done very simply by add the criteria createdDate > <date> to the filter for the board.
So using the Demo Kanban project (DK) as an example you would set a filter

Project = DK AND createdDate > '01/05/2020'

You may have to adjust the date format as well as the actual date to get the right configuration for your timezone/instance.

If your business logic is different then again setting the filter to match your business logic is a way forward.

As @Walter Buggenhout starting a new project will give you an empty board but if you ever have business logic which requires you to look at old and new tickets you will have to resort to using filters to group the two projects together.
