Hi - I keep tagging people in comments - sometimes it pulls their name, sometimes it pulls their name plus a string of random characters BUT all the time the email notification don't have the names in at all
Help?
if the user is not part of the project then their name cannot be mentioned. but i'm a bit perplexed by the random characters comment here.

They are part of the community... which is why it's strange....
community? Did you verify that the individual(s) were part of the project? What permissions do they have? Do they appear in the Assignee dropdown?
yes to all of this - they are users the same as me... we never used to have this problem it's just started recently
I suspect this is related to recent changes associated with GDPR. Please contact Atlassian Support so they can log into your instance and inspect.
