Why can't I see the the total estimate for a particular Sprint?

Saurabh Chaurasia April 18, 2022

I am administering an organization managed project. When dragging 'Issues' from the Project 'Backlog' to the 'Sprint Backlog', the total estimate for the sprint doesn't get displayed even when individual 'Issues' have been estimated and 'Story Size' is allocated.

Hello @Saurabh Chaurasia

Welcome to the community.

Your image shows that you are using a field called "Story Size". The Estimates that show on the Backlog screen are limited in which fields they can access, and which fields are used are based on the Estimation settings under Board Settings.

If you want to show the estimates based on Story points, then you need to be putting your story points into the built-in field named Story Points. Estimation cannot get that from a custom field you have created called Story Size.

If you pull down the Estimation Statistic field in the above screen it will show you which fields can be used to show the Estimate totals on your backlog screen.

Thanks @Trudy Claspill . This is in fact the next step that I did.

Here's the context: My original problem statement was to be able to see the total estimate on the Epic pane as a sum of individual Story points. I tried a couple of things here.

1. I changed the Estimation Statistic to 'Original Time Estimate' and changed the Issue View layout to show this field. In this case, I was able to see the Estimate summed up in the Epic pane. See below. But this doesn't solve my issue since I need Estimation in terms of story points.

2. I tried to change the Estimation Statistic to 'Story Points'. The dropdown doesn't have that as an option though. It rather shows 'Story Size' as an option. See below.

3. I then went to check JIRA settings. In 'Custom fields', I found only two fields defined. One was 'Story point estimate' which is defined by JIRA itself and another was 'Story Size' which was user defined. There was no 'Story Point' field defined.

Now, I assumed my problem statement would have a solution if I can have 'Story point estimate' in the Estimation Statistic drop-down menu. But I don't see that as well. I went to several community posts and saw that people have different options in the drop down. See below.

As of now, my problem statement is :

1. How can I customize the 'Estimation Statistic' drop-down to include Story Point Estimate as an option.??

2. Will this solve the original problem statement?

Appreciate your help.

Did either of the posts you found (could you provide links to those?) offer a solution for the missing Story Points field in the Estimations list?

I don't know why your instance would not have the Story Points custom field. That is a default custom field created by Jira Software. In your Custom Fields screen can you check if somebody inappropriately moved it to the Trash?

It appears that the list of available fields for Estimation for a board with show any numeric field available in the issues in the project. Based on my experimentation, though, when I selected a custom numeric field other than Story Points or Original Time Estimate or Issue Count) then the bubbles that show Estimation totals in the Epics pane and above sprints remained blank.

If somebody has moved your Story Points field to the Trash, I recommend you restore it and consider using that instead of your Story Size field. It will take some work to do that and move your current Story Size values to the Story Points field, but then you would be able to display the Estimation totals.
