Why can't I paste a table into the Description field without exceeding the character limit?

When I build a table in another tool, and try to paste it into the Description field in Jira, I get an error saying I've exceeded the character limit. Even though the text I pasted is well below the character limit, I think the table formatting makes it appear as if the content is much more. I need to be able to copy and paste tables into Jira.
