Why boards belongs to project now?

What is the idea behind it?

We have a board that is "product" wise were we want to see all sub projects in a single board

It's probably because large numbers of people make the mistake of thinking that boards belong to projects.  Instead of making it clearer that they do not, Atlassian seem to have decided to make it look more like they do.
