Why are Space Templates and Archiving only available to Enterprise accounts?

Frank Vidal

I don't understand why creating Space templates and archiving spaces is only available to those companies that are part of the Enterprise plan.  Why?  Smaller companies would benefit immensely from being able to templatize spaces.  Is the reason greed on Atlassian's part or is it a technical limitation of the Basic or Premium plans?

Hello @Frank Vidal

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

As to why Atlassian the Custom Space Templates feature or any other feature is available only in one of the higher priced plans, we as users of the Atlassian products cannot speak authoritatively about the reasoning behind decisions made by Atlassian.

In general, Atlassian is a for-profit company. Any for-profit company that has a levels-of-service model is going to segregate some elements of service to be available only to customers willing to pay more.

One could argue that many of the features not available in the Free plan and only in a paid plan, or only in a paid plan higher than the one currently in use, would be valuable to the customers at a lower plan tier.

If you feel strongly about a particular feature being pay-walled I recommend that you provide feedback directly to Atlassian about that through a support case or using the Help > Feedback option available directly within the Jira product.

Hi @Frank Vidal, if you are open to installing third-party marketplace apps, Templating.app offers robust space templates (as well as templates for issues, subtasks, descriptions, boards, and checklists). Creating these templates with Templating.app is also easier than using native Jira automations.

Full disclaimer: I am affiliated with the team behind Templating.app but it also means I can ask any questions you may have.

Thank you for sharing.  I'm going to test your app to see if it meets our needs.

Quick question...does your app work with Confluence spaces as well?

Thanks @Frank Vidal ! Templating.app only works with Jira.

For Jira-Confluence integration, I can suggest another app, called AutoPage, which automatically creates Confluence pages from Jira (based on the predefined rules, so you only create the pages you need), and keeps them in sync. So for example, when a work item in Jira is edited, the Confluence page is updated automatically.

Is that what you are looking for or did you mean Confluence templates?

Hi Frank - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Templates for Creating a Space are available for all subscription plans. Is there something you are trying to do that is not available to you?

Archiving of Spaces is also available to Premium subscriptions, not just Enterprise.

Again, where are you finding that something is limiting you?

@John Funk

The author is asking about the ability not just use existing Space Templates to create space but also to create new Space Templates, which is only available in the Enterprise plan according to the documentation.

Ah, I misread that - thanks for the clarification. In that case, you can create a base Space with all of the configurations you need (and some automation rules for some specialized things) and in effect, have your own template. Then create a new Space based on this Space you have created already. I do this all of the time, and rarely if ever use the Space templates because they create a bunch of stuff I usually don't want, and then I have to go delete stuff.

@John Funk I do this now, but template boards and their settings are not copied/duplicated over.

True, you would need to manually create the board by either copying an existing board and changing the board filter, or create the board from scratch based on the existing new project.
