When is the best time in the project life cycle to create the project version?

We created a project and are at the stage where we are assigning tasks and writing stories. Is there a 'best practice' as to when to begin versioning?

I would recommend you to plan your versions as soon as you can to properly track the progress of your team in the stories. Versions are the best way to split your team progress into releases and better organize the display of your reports.
