When Order By a custom field, Jira still groups by project

Those new to the Atlassian Community have posted less than three times. Give them a warm welcome!
One of my users is attempting to build a board but when they use the "Order By" function for a custom field the fields are grouped by project and then sorted, rather than simply ordering by the custom field.
How do I stop this autogrouping
