What is the sequence of the Epics in the Epic Links dropdown

In JIRA Issue Create or Edit and want to select an Epic Link for the issue,

when selecting the 'Epic Link' dropdown for a list of Epics -

(1) what determines the sequence of Epic Links displayed?  

it definitely doesn't look alphabetical or most popular

(2) is there any way to change or alter the sequence of the Epic Links displayed?

Epic links are displayed based on alphabetical order of Epic Names. It considers the white space and special character in the order first and then the alphabetical order.

Try changing the epic names if you wanted to check the same.
