What is the benefit of using versions in Service Projects?

SKo March 25, 2022 edited

What does it mean to create and release versions? What effects does this have? Should values be assigned to fix and affects version field for every issue? What is the difference between this two fields? Can they be automatically filled with default values like the currently released version's name?

Hi @SKo

Depends on what your Service Management Project is for?

For example, you might use Versions for bugs identified by customers. Place them in the Production Release they're being fixed in, and have an Automation Rule to notify users via their tickets when released.

But - you don't have to use them, it's dependent on your service scenarios!

For your other questions...

  • The difference between the two fields is...
    • Fix Version is the version a bug/defect will be fixed in
    • Affects Version is the version a bug/defect is detected in, and impacts
    • For example Version 1.0 has a bug (affected); Version 1.1 fixes it (fix)
  • Yes, you could automatically populate these fields if needed using Automation Rules

Let us know if you need any specific advice on how to use Versions in your scenarios, or in creating Automation Rules :)

What does it mean to create and release versions?

A version is a collection of issues that have been addressed and delivered or ready to be delivered to production.

What effects does this have?

No effect at all other than "labeling" your issues in a manner that allows you to view the data historically.

Should values be assigned to fix and affects version field for every issue?

They don't have to but they can. The affects version is a means of indicating which releases of a product are affected by the issue. This is typically used for bugs obviously.

What is the difference between this two fields?

Affects - existing version(s) that exhibit the issue

Fix - version(s) where the issue is addressed

Can they be automatically filled with default values like the currently released version's name?

No and generally that would not be desirable.
