I believe it stands for Jira Query Language.
It's the syntax that is used to search for items within the Jira system.

That was my first guess. With all the functionality and terminology in the Atlassian set of products you would think that someone at Atlassian would have been tasked long ago with populating a page that contains common acronyms for the different applications. Thank you for your response.
