For what it's worth, I've repeatedly been told that any good writer stays well away from acronyms.  Only ones where the context and nature of the document means it absolutely cannot be missed are acceptable alone (which narrows it down to about 15 in the IT industry), and any others used should always be defined in the same page they are used, ideally when they are first used
