We want the client to be updated on progress but not to be able to see everything.

We only want them to see a list of tickets in the current release.  We do not want them to access Backlog or Sprints. We want them only to see releases and certain fields in the individual tickets. How do we do this?

Give them only Core licences, they won't get access to the boards (and they're cheaper than Software licences).

Or, give them Software access, but do not share the boards with them.

However

That's not going to happen - JIRA doesn't do field level security.  They can either see the whole issue, or none of it.
