Validation error message, on transition, does not display on board (only detailed view)

I have a simple workflow New > Under Review > Done.  I created a Fields Required Validation rule so that users cannot transition to Done unless a specific field is populated.  I also created an error message for users to explain why they may not have been able to transition to Done.

The Rule and Error Message work just fine when attempting to change status in the detailed view of the item.  However, when I attempt to transition from a board (drag to Done), a default message displays, instead.  Unfortunately this message is less than useful to the user in indicating why the item failed to proceed to Done.

Note: I am not using any transition screen between the states.

Is there a way to get the error message to display on the board?

This can be happening if you're enabled the Enhance my board and backlog resource.

It gives a less resource-intensive view of Jira as a web platform, so it will actually display a standard comment for validation.

If you have the option disabled, the error message will be displayed in the format you configured
