Update active Project to a new Project template

We have created a new project template and need to migrate existing project to the new template (types, workflow, screens, etc).  I am not seeing a way to do this in one step.. Would someone be able to provide me the order of operations in order to do this so i dont screw up current projects :)

Hi,

You can change the schemes of the project to the target schemes so you do not have to import issues. See here for an example with issue type scheme. You will be prompted to map source issue types to target isuse types. Same goes for workflow schemes (map statuses).

I would advise to try this in test environment first.

Thanks Antoine

Any recommendation on order of operation for updating the schemes?

This is how I would do it :

  • Make sure the field configuration is compatible with the new project (i.e. check that custom field configurations are the same), so values will remain on existing issues. Then update the scheme.
  • Create a temporary workflow scheme, so that current issues are mapped to their target workflows. You will be prompted to map statuses.
  • Update issue type scheme, you will be prompted to map issue types. If fields are to be updated, you will be noticed so be careful about it.
  • Update the workflow scheme to the target one. If previous steps have been completed correctly, it should be straight forward.
  • Update screen scheme, it should cause many problems.

Then you can update the remaining configurations (permissions, notifications, priorities, etc.) which should not be an issue.

The whole process can be easy or tough depending on how different the two projects are (and especially how the issues are populated).

Hello,

What do you mean that you created a new project template? Did you create a new project and want to move all configuration from an old project to the new one?

in essence yes.  We do not want to create a new project if we dont have to but would like to apply the settings and configuration defined in another project to an existing project as we would like to keep the historical nature of the work on the project and not have to go between two projects.. i hope that makes sense.

You can not apply setting from another project to a project. You would need to move all issues from the old project to the new one. Use the bulk move feature for it.
