Unable to inline edit the 'Assignee' field in the Issue Edit/View screen

For one particular JIRA project, I am unable to inline edit the 'Assignee' field in the Issue Edit/View screen, even though 'Assign to me' button appears on screen. I am Jira admin, I have checked and make sure that ALL Edit/View issue screen for all Issue Types in that affected Jira project has the "Assign' field. Workflow does not change/limit assignee permission.

What else did I miss?

Thanks.

Hi Tony,

What happens when you select the Assign to Me option? Is there an error? Is the field gray'd out? Something else? Are you able to assign to another person? Or no one shows up in the list?

Hi @Tony Yue

If the "Assign to Me" button is available but the Assignee field cannot be edited inline on the issue view screen for a specific project, consider checking the following:

1. Field Configuration – Ensure the Assignee field is not hidden in the project's Field Configuration.
2. Permission Scheme – Verify that users have the Assign Issues permission and that intended assignees have the Assignable User permission.
3. Workflow Properties – Check for workflow properties that may restrict assignment or editing.
4. Third-Party Apps/Behaviours – Review any ScriptRunner Behaviours or other app-based customizations that could make the field read-only.
5. Screen Configuration – Compare the Screen Scheme and Issue Type Screen Scheme with a project where inline editing works correctly.

If the issue is limited to a single project, comparing its configuration (permissions, field configuration, workflow, and customizations) with a working project is usually the fastest way to identify the cause.

I hope this helps!

Dear @Tony Yue

The fact that Assign to me appears means you probably have:

  • Assignable User permission
  • Assign Issues permission

But inline editing of the Assignee field may additionally require:

  • Edit Issues permission

Check the project's Permission Scheme and confirm your user/group has:

  • Edit Issues
  • Assign Issues
  • Browse Projects

Assignee field is the only field you can't edit inline?

Hello Enric,

Thank you very much for quickly providing suggestion to my question.
Yes, I, as a member of Jira support group, does have Edit and assign permissions. All users who have JIRA access can browse project.
That affected JIRA project utilized "Default permission scheme". This permission scheme is shared by 100 Jira projects, and only this one is having issue changing assignee, thus puzzling me.
