Unable to edit recurring automation

Jira Cloud, Company Managed Project.

I am a project admin, site admin and org admin.

 

I created a recurring automation in Jira to clone a work item every week.  But I have a few of these now and I wanted to name them in a more sane fashion so I don't have to guess which one is which.  But the darn thing is read only and I don't seem to have a way on any screen to edit it.  I've tried on the Project Settings and from Global Automation settings.  Always unable to edit.

What am I missing?

Hi Christa,

Copy the rule and see if you can update the new copy.

Hi @Christa Meck ,

Seems very strange. You might want to clone it and turn this one off. If you can't clone or disable it, I would suggest you contact Atlassian support.

To the best of my knowledge , we cannot edit this automation rule because it is a Recurring automation rule and they are always created as Read Only.

Once done, it will create a recurring Automation rule for the respective Jira work item. You can find this under Project settings>>Automation. 

You will find that it has a “Recurring” label as well as a “Read Only” label. This means that this rule cannot be edited once created. It cannot be edited by the actor or owner of the rule. The only way to stop a recurring Jira work item is to delete its recurring Automation rule.

Hello @Christa Meck 

You should be able to edit a Private rule when you are the owner of the rule. Can you confirm that you are logged in to Jira as the same identity/account that is shown as the rule Owner?

If so, you might want to reach out to Atlassian support for additional investigation.

As a work around, try changing the Who can edit this rule?  option in the Rule Details from Private to Specific Admins or All Admins.

Hi @Christa Meck 

First thing: based on the image you posted, your rule is selected as Private for edits.  I recommend never doing that.  There is too much risk of someone getting "hit by the lottery bus", and creating a maintenance nightmare for future admins.  To limit access, perhaps set it to All Admins or to Specific Admins, with always at least two people assigned.

Next, do you have multiple user accounts?  For example, one for Org Admin and Product Admin, but different from your day-to-day account?  If so, are you logged into the lower-permission one?  If not, have you tried:

  • logging out of Jira,
  • clearing your browser cache,
  • closing all browsers, and
  • starting one browser to log in and re-try.

Next, this could be a rule "glitch", as suggested by Rudy and John.  The steps to disable this one, copy it, edit the copy, and then delete the original should work for that case.

 

Finally as a comment: while comparing what you showed to my site, I was confused for a bit as you have a space named "Jira Administration"...and thus this is a space-scoped.  That may confuse other peer admins as they may think this is a global rule based on the breadcrumbs and name...but it is not.
